Angelica's Top 5 Books Discovered in 2017

2017 wasn't just a great year, it was a year of discovery for me.

I both discovered and rediscovered authors I love (long story) and I discovered older gems that I felt deserved just as much recognition as all the new books in 2017, because these books are AMAZING and deserve all the stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The reason I say I rediscovered authors was because a few years ago I used to binge read A LOT back when I had more time to read. I went through books like people go through clothes. I didn't read, I devoured books, and I loved it because I discovered a lot of hidden gems in the Kindle store but one day that all went downhill when my kindle gave out on me. It didn't completely die thankfully, but it stopped working and wouldn't let me do anything, and the only suggestion Amazon gave me was to do a factory reset. Having no other choice, I did it, not even thinking about the consequences, and when it was all said and done, I lost everything. Not the books themselves but my bookshelf where I kept all my favorites was GONE. I nearly cried because it was tons of books and to remember them all was nearly impossible.

I remembered most of them based on their cover but there were two in particular that I could not remember for the life of me, and the worst part was that they were part of a series, so I never got to know what happened in the second or third book. *Sighs* I looked and looked but never found them because I didn't remember the title much less the author. I tried googling particular things I remembered from each book but it was all to no avail. I ended up throwing in the towel.

This year I began my search again because I really wanted to finish both series. I went on the hunt and looked through a book blog and after going through THREE YEARS of reviews I finally found them and you can't even imagine how happy I was. I was so freaking excited!

The funny thing is I was already following one of the authors on Facebook because I joined her group when she released a new book this year that intrigued me, and little did I know, she was also the same author of one of the books I had been looking for. I actually told her about this story and she thought it was funny and was really glad I found her again. She said it was meant to be and I really think it was. 😊

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten around to finishing either series yet, because there were so many amazing books that came out this year and there just isn't enough time to read them all, but next year my biggest goal is to finish both series, so I can finally know what happened. And if I love both series as much as I suspect I will, I'm sure you will find them on my top reads next year. 😉

Now, enough about that. Let's talk books I discovered!

I just finished my 30th book this year and even though I didn't reach my goal, I'm happy with all the new books and authors I discovered this year. This year I read a mix of old and new books, and I have to say that there were quite a few older books that stole my heart and I couldn't not share them with all of you. They deserve to be recognized just as much as all the new books that came out this year, so I am going to give them all the love and the recognition they deserve. Right here. Right now.

So without further ado, here are the Top 5 books I discovered this year in alphabetical order.

A Love Letter to Whiskey
Kandi Steiner

If there's one author who really knows how to pull at your heartstrings, it's Kandi Steiner. She made me ball like a baby and put me through the wringer with A Love Letter to Whiskey. She didn't just stop there though, she also broke my heart and crushed it to bits and pieces, and even though it hurt like a b*tch, I'm not even mad because she did it in the most beautiful way. It was almost poetic really. The crazy thing is I loved it and want more, so bring on the heartache, I'm ready. 💔

Balance
Lucia Franco

When you think about a book as much as I have thought about Balance, you know it's GOOD. 😉 I read Balance MONTHS ago and I still can't stop thinking about Kova and all the hot sexual tension that exists between him and Adrianna. *swoons* It is off the charts HOT! I loved everything about Balance and am waiting eagerly for Execution, the second book in the Off Balance series. I seriously cannot wait to get my hands on it! Execution is without a doubt my most anticipated read of 2018. I NEED to know what is happening between Kova and Adrianna. The wait is killing me but I have no doubt that Lucia Franco is going to make the wait totally worth it! So if you have not read Balance and enjoy a GOOD taboo novel, do yourself a favor and READ IT!

Pull Me Close
Sidney Halston

Pull Me Close was one of my absolute favorite reads of 2017. Words can't even begin to describe how amazing this novel is. I absolutely loved it from beginning to end because it surprised me every step of the way, and that in itself was really refreshing.

I love, Love, LOVED Pull Me Close and cannot rave enough about it. It took my breath away and left me wanting so much more, in the best way of course. 😉 I hope everyone out there takes a chance on Pull Me Close, because it is such a beautiful story full of romance, tender moments, steamy moments and everything in between, so do yourself a favor and one-click it now!

The Sun and the Moon
Leslie McAdam

The Sun and the Moon is the second book I have read by Leslie McAdam and I honestly didn't think I could love her writing anymore than I already did but she totally stole my heart with Amelia's story. I love Amelia because just like me she lives with depression, and I see a lot of myself in her and understand exactly where she is coming from. I loved her as a character because I feel that she embodied perfectly what it's like to live with depression and shows how it affects so many of us. I'm really glad Leslie decided to broach this subject because depression is very real and it's something that affects so many of us. More importantly, it's something that needs to be talked about, but Leslie didn't just talk about it, she created a wonderful story for those of us who are often underrepresented.

Hopeless
Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover was one of my biggest and best discoveries in 2017. I had never heard of Colleen until a few months ago when Instagram ad for the show based on her novel popped up on my feed. If it wasn't for that ad I may never have stumbled upon her show or worse, her work. Thankfully I discovered her and before I knew it I found myself reading Hopeless. What started as a coming of age story turned into something more sinister and twisted, and I loved every second of it. It hooked me from the very first page and didn't let me go until the ride was over, and boy was it a bumpy ride but it was also very thrilling and left me wanting so much more of Sky and Holder's story. Their story truly captivated me and I cannot wait to read it from Holder's perspective.

And there you have it, the Top 5 books I discovered in 2017. I truly hope you have enjoyed reading about the Top 5 books I discovered this year, and just in case I don't make another post before the year ends, I just want to wish you all a very Happy New Year! I hope 2018 brings you all nothing but amazing things!

Angelica's Top 5 Reads of 2017

2017 has come and gone and 2018 is just around the corner!

Can you believe it? I hardly can. It's crazy how time flies but I notice the older I get, the faster time passes me by. This is especially true the closer I get to 30. Time really needs to slow down. I'm already past the hump and am in no rush to turn 30, but that's life for you. It passes you by in the blink of an eye.

This year wasn't perfect by any means but despite everything that happened, 2017 has been a good year for me. This year alone, I started this blog. I joined Twitter and learned how to actually use it. 😂 I started a Bookstagram account and met some amazing bookworms, who are all so kind and welcoming. If you're not already on Bookstagram, I highly recommend you join. It's AMAZING! I love it so much! 💖

(One of my recent Bookstagram pictures. You can find me @angelicasbookhaven)

This year I also joined a ton of author groups on Facebook and I mean TONS! I never knew these groups even existed until I found Lex Martin's Wildcats through her author page. When I joined her group, I felt like I had found Narnia, because her group was unlike any group I had ever joined on Facebook. There are tons of bookworms like myself, giveaways and Lex Martin herself. When I posted my very first comment in the group and Lex Martin actually responded, I was over the moon and totally fangirling. 🙈 I never imagined in a hundred years that I would one day get to talk to the authors who write the books I love but thankfully Facebook has made that possible.

Through Lex Martin's group I discovered Kandi Steiner and Leslie McAdam and from their groups I found more and more authors and am now a member of so many groups I don't even know how many I'm in at this rate. I love it though because I have met so many wonderful people through these amazing groups and am thankful to now be able to call some of these people my book buddies. 😊

I also discovered tons of new authors this year and have had the pleasure of interacting with many of them, which really makes me thankful that social media exists. If it wasn't for Facebook and Instagram I probably never would have virtually met, much less interacted with all the authors I've talked to this year, so I am very grateful for everything social media has made possible for me.

Overall, 2017 has been a great year for me full of many firsts and new discoveries. It was not the best year by far, but I do have to say it had many positives that outweigh all the bad things that happened this year, and I have faith that 2018 will be even better.

I truly hope that you all had a wonderful year and hope 2018 brings you all nothing but amazing things. 💖

Now, let's talk books! That's why we are here after all, right? 😉

I've read 29 books this year and am in the middle of finishing my 30th book right now. In case you are wondering what it is, I am currently reading Stuck-Up Suit by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward. There's a high chance this book will be the last book I read this year, because I'm not so sure I'll be able to squeeze in one last book before the year is up. If it is, I am happy with my last read of the year, because you can never go wrong with anything Keeland and Ward write. I am a big fan of theirs and love reading their work, so I'm definitely happy with my choice whether it is my last or second to last book of the year. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what time permits.

I went through the list of books I read this year and I have to admit it was not easy choosing just 5 books, because I read a lot of amazing books this year, but after a lot of contemplating I narrowed down my list and managed to choose my Top 5 reads of 2017, which I highly recommend everyone reads at least once. If not more. 😉

Without further ado, here are my Top 5 reads of the year in alphabetical order.

All About the D
Lex Martin & Leslie McAdam

I'm a sucker for a good romance novel and All About the D delivered not just on the romance aspect but also on the Scoville scale because it was hot AF. *Fans myself thinking about Josh* Josh is the man of many women's dreams, myself included, but move over ladies because he is mine. I love, Love, LOVE Josh and Evie too of course! I couldn't not love her. As much as I wish he was mine, Josh and Evie were perfect for each other and I loved everything about them. They made me laugh until I teared up, and they made me smile like a dork more times than I can count. I loved them wholeheartedly and have to say that All About the D is without a doubt one of my favorite rom-com's not just this year but EVER.

Bad Habit
Charleigh Rose

Bad Habit is a novel that intrigued me from the moment Asher Kelley climbed through Briar Vale's brother's window. Just that moment alone hooked me and made me never want to let him go. *Gives Asher my heart* I absolutely loved Bad Habit from beginning to end. The tension was HOT and the steamy moments were palpable. *Gah!* It was perfect in every way and I cannot rave enough about Asher Kelley. He is as hot as book boyfriends come and I want him to be mine, all mine. Sorry, not sorry, Briar. 😜 Seriously, if you have not read Bad Habit yet, you need to read it ASAP! When you do, you are going to be mad at yourself for not reading it sooner. I sure was and am now suffering from a bad book hangover. #NoRegrets

Bohemian
Kathryn Nolan

It's very rare to stumble upon an author who leaves you breathless, but Kathryn Nolan didn't just leave me breathless when I read Bohemian, she swept me off my feet, stole my heart and never gave it back.

Nolan has a way with words that I can't get enough of. She makes it so easy to visualize everything, it's like she's painting an image in your head with every word she writes. It's beautiful really and something I want to experience more of. I can't wait to see what other stories her brilliant mind comes up with. No matter what she writes, I know it will be amazing.

Cyanide
Ella Fields

Just thinking about Cyanide makes me sigh, in a good way of course. 😉  Cyanide was the first book I read by Ella Fields and I did not want it to end. If I could have a whole series on Jared and Vera, I totally would, because I loved everything about their story. I especially love how they both came from very different worlds and backgrounds, which was really hard on them because it was literally them against the world. They made it work though because their love for one another surpassed all their differences, and they proved not only to them but to everyone, that love really does conquer all. *Swoons* Their love for one another may not have been perfect but they are perfect for each other.

The Unrequited
Saffron A. Kent

I'm a sucker for taboo novels but The Unrequited took it further than any student/teacher romance novel I have ever read. I like that it pushed me out of my comfort zone though, because it forced me to see that there are different kinds of love out there. Thomas and Layla's bordered on obsessive and was also a teensy bit crazy, but I totally fell for them and what they shared, because even though their love story isn't your average love story, it suits them perfectly because they are the right kind of crazy for each other.

That's it! I hope you enjoyed reading about my Top 5 reads of 2017. Next I will be creating a list of the top 5 books I discovered in 2017 that are oldies but goodies, so stay tuned for that. 😉

Prologue Reveal & Giveaway! - Messy Love by Stephanie Witter

Title: Messy Love
Standalone full-length novel
Author: Stephanie Witter
Category/Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance

WYATT
I had always thought that being a good person was easy. I had been so damn wrong I’d laugh if only my fucking heart weren’t about to irremediably break and if I wasn’t so scared.
Being good wasn’t easy. Doing something good for someone else could very well ruin you and leave you with nothing but darkness. I was about to experience that first hand.
I looked down at the old and battered stuffed turtle with a missing leg in my hands. One tiny object changed everything right when I was just starting to turn my life around, right when I was making an effort to make her happy.
  “What’s that?’’
Her soft voice full of sleep after a night I was sure to cherish for the rest of my days made me tighten my grip around the turtle until some puffy white stuffing fell at my bare feet.
I closed the door and turned around to stare at the most beautiful woman I had ever met, a beautiful woman who turned my life upside down months ago and forced me to be a better man.
But if I wanted to be truly better I needed to break her heart and mine.
My life had always been a mess and every time I had thought things were looking up and I dropped my guard something else came up. With her in my arms all night long, I had thought that I had a fucking right to be happy and claim my damn happy ending. I believed that because I fucking loved her with all my destroyed and poisoned heart I could be with her because she saw the ugly in me and still wanted me, even after all the pain I caused her. But no. I couldn’t have her.
I swallowed past the tightness in my throat and lost myself in her eyes.
She knew me, so much better than I thought possible. I didn’t need to utter a word for her to understand I was gearing up to hurt her.
She took a step back, shook her head once and looked away. She was already retreating from me, and it cut me so deep I wouldn’t feel less pain or less weak if I was bleeding all over the place.
“Please, don’t.’’ The plea in her voice was my undoing. Shit. How could I do this after everything?
I closed my eyes and turned my back to her. I needed to hide. I couldn’t do this if she kept on looking at me like that, with all that pain etched over her face. But before I could find my voice, hers tore through me.
“If you do this again, I’m not coming back this time, Wyatt.’’
My eyes fell on that fucking stuffed turtle so old it smelled of mold and dirt. I didn’t have a choice. I needed to protect her. She thought I was only reverting to my old habits, hurting her just because I was scared, but this time was different.
I had an excellent reason to get her out of my life. I needed to remember that.
I closed my eyes, didn’t turn around and said the words I knew would haunt me for the rest of my life.
  “Then go.’’

Book Review - Shameless by Lex Martin

Synopsis:

Brady…

What the hell do I know about raising a baby? Nothing. Not a goddamn thing.

Yet here I am, the sole guardian of my niece. I’d be lost if it weren’t for Katherine, the beautiful girl who seems to have all the answers. Katherine, who’s slowly finding her way into my cynical heart.

I keep reminding myself that I can’t fall for someone when we don’t have a future. But telling myself this lie and believing it are two different things.

Katherine…

When Brady shows up on a Harley, looking like an avenging angel—six feet, three inches of chiseled muscle, eyes the color of wild sage, and sun-kissed skin emblazoned with tattoos—I’m not sure if I should fall at his feet or run like hell. Because if I tell him what happened the night his family died, he might hate me.

What I don’t count on are the nights we spend together trying to forget the heartache that brought us here. I promise him it won’t mean anything, that I won’t fall in love.

I shouldn’t make promises I can’t keep.

* Author's note: Due to mature situations and sexual content, Shameless is recommended for readers 18+.

Review:

ShamelessShameless by Lex Martin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Shameless is the book that introduced me to Lex Martin's work and the indie book world, so I have a lot to thank her for. Not only did she create a wonderful book for me and so many others to enjoy, but her book also lead me to the wonderful book community I am now a part of, so I am very grateful to have stumbled upon Shameless, its amazing author and the indie book world.

What can I say? I absolutely loved Shameless! Just thinking about it makes me swoon, but I mean, who wouldn't swoon over Brady? He's your typical bad boy with a heart of gold that I just want to lick. Is that too much?! *Shrugs* You'll understand when you read Shameless. After all, he is six feet of purely male chiseled perfection.

Did I mention Brady has green eyes and tattoos? *swoons* I hope I have your attention now because Brady totally deserves it. All of it.

Brady isn't just fine as hell. He is also this lovable hunk who will make your heart melt when you see the way he treats his adorable niece, Izzy. It's honestly so damn cute and totally swoon worthy. *Gah!* I couldn't help but smile like a big dork when he'd interact with her. It was the sweetest thing ever. *melts into a puddle*

I guess I should stop going on and on about how hot and perfect Brady is and actually talk about the story itself, huh? Well, I'll sum it up for you and try not to give too much away. Long story short, Brady's brother and sister-in-law die in a car accident. (I promise this isn't a spoiler) Thankfully, his niece Izzy was not with her parents at the time of the accident, but because both her parents die she is left an orphan. Brady being her uncle and immediate blood relative after her parents, has to step up and take care of her.

The funny thing is, Brady has never taken care of a baby in his life so it creates some pretty hilarious moments between the two. Luckily for him, he doesn't have to do it all on his own. Why do I say this? Well he has Katherine, his niece's nanny, but Kat is not just Izzy's nanny, she was also best friends with Izzy's mom. She is as close to a mom as Izzy has, so much so, Kat loves Izzy as if she was her own. You can tell right off the bat that Kat only wants the best for Izzy, so she helps Brady be the best uncle he can be for her and teaches him everything he needs to know, and let me just say, a lot of cuteness ensues, so consider yourself warned. ;)

Brady and Kat are both complete opposites but when you spend 24/7 together, those differences stop mattering, and feelings are bound to develop and develop they did. ;)

I loved Brady and Kat's chemistry. It was so HOT! *swoons* If you are a fan of lots of sexy time in your romance novels than you need to read Shameless ASAP, because Lex Martin included lots of it and it was all so sensual and very, very steamy. *fans myself remembering all those amazing and hot as sin scenes*

Brady and Kat also had their adorable moments that included none other than Brady's adorable niece, Izzy. They melted my heart more times than I can count, and I loved every second of it. They are so perfect for each other. *Gah!*

In case I didn't say it enough, let me reiterate, I love, Love, LOVED Shameless! It had everything I look for in my romance novels and was perfect in every way. I cannot rave enough about Shameless, and highly recommend it to all romance lovers out there. If you haven't read anything by Lex Martin, Shameless is a good place to start in my opinion.

I give Shameless 5 out of 5 stars and cannot and I mean CANNOT wait to read Reckless, the standalone companion to Shameless. It releases this coming year on February 20, 2018, so make sure to mark those calendars. ;)
